Frequently asked questions.
what modalities do you use at New amsterdam psychotherapy?
The treatment modalities used at New Amsterdam Psychotherapy are determined based on client need. However, most often, a psychodynamic approach is applied in individual psychotherapy. In psychodynamic therapy, there is an emphasis on getting to the root cause of maladaptive coping mechanisms, relationship problems, anxiety, depression, substance use, and other challenges.
The therapist may also apply techniques from other modalities, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy where it is in the best interest of the patient.
how do you approach couple therapy?
Many couples therapists focus primarily on effective communication skills and emotional regulation. While these principles are important in a functioning relationship, it is my experience that understanding the root causes of relationship dynamics, and the “baggage” that we each bring along, is what can facilitate lasting change. With couples, I spend at least two sessions meeting with each partner individually in order to understand their personal history and what they bring to the current relationship.
Do you work with gay, lesbian, queer, and transgender couples?
Yes!
Do you have to be married to go to couple therapy?
No! In fact, many couples choose to go to couple therapy before deciding to marry.
What do you work on with individual clients?
Clients come to therapy with a range of issues. Here are just a few of the most common areas I have worked with clients to improve:
Relationship patterns
Depression
Anxiety disorders, including social anxiety
Managing stress from work and other demands
Substance use disorders
Reducing the impact of trauma, including relational trauma
Career transition
What kind of clients do you have experience working with?
I have experience working with a diverse range of clients. Most of my experience is in working with adolescents and adults up to age 50. I also have significant experience working with clients who are immigrants and international students, clients who identify along the LBGTQ+ spectrum, clients who work in high-pressure jobs, and clients in career transition.
I also understand the unique challenges that intercultural, international, and interracial couples face.
do you work with children?
I do not currently work with young children. However, I do work with teenagers, aged 16 and older.
how much do individual and couple therapy sessions cost?
Individual sessions are $175. Couple sessions are $200.
can i use my insurance?
New Amsterdam Psychotherapy is not in-network with any insurance plans. However, many clients are able to cover some of the cost using their out-of-network coverage. New Amsterdam will submit out-of-network claims on your behalf as a courtesy where applicable.
do you offer sliding scale or reduced fees?
About 1/3 of my clients are seen on a sliding scale or reduced fee agreement. At this time, only full fee appointments are available. More information on pricing is available on the services page.
how many sessions will i need?
During your free consultation, you will learn more about what treatment may look like for you. Couples often see a significant benefit from as few as 12-20 sessions, while individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, and other diagnoses may require treatment over the course of a year or more.
is therapy Confidential?
All information shared in therapy sessions is confidential, and patient’s records are stored in a HIPAA compliant electronic medical record system. Anonymity is not guaranteed, as patients are likely to encounter other patients of the practice in the waiting room and other common areas. Information shared in therapy sessions will not be disclosed to anyone, except in limited circumstances to be discussed in the client’s initial consultation.
For clients requiring a higher degree of privacy due to safety concerns, sensitive professional circumstances, or other reasons, additional measures may be discussed.
